Collection: Selenite
Few stones catch light the way selenite does. Under a lamp the fibers glow from within, and a well-cut tower seems lit from the base up. We choose our selenite for that quality of light, for clean, unchipped edges, and for the kind of hand-finishing that respects a soft mineral rather than rushing it.
What Selenite Is
Selenite is a variety of gypsum, hydrated calcium sulfate, and it is remarkably soft, roughly 2 on the Mohs scale, soft enough to mark with a fingernail. Strictly speaking, selenite refers to the transparent, tabular, sheet-like form of gypsum, while the silky fibrous material used for most towers and wands is properly called satin spar. Both are the same mineral species, and the trade has used the names interchangeably for decades. Gypsum forms by evaporation in sedimentary basins and in clay-rich beds, and major sources include Morocco, Mexico and the United States. The Naica mine in Chihuahua produced some of the largest natural crystals ever documented. Because gypsum is water-soluble, selenite should be kept dry and dusted rather than washed, and it should be handled gently since it cleaves in thin sheets.
Selenite Meaning and Metaphysical Properties
Named for the Greek goddess of the moon, selenite is traditionally associated with the crown and higher chakras and is regarded in crystal practice as a stone of clarity and light. It is best known as a cleansing stone, and many people keep it as the piece that tends to all their other pieces.
It is said to clear stagnant energy from a space and to help quiet mental chatter before meditation. Practitioners often describe working with it as a kind of reset, a way of marking the difference between the day behind them and the practice ahead.
How to Use Selenite
- Rest other crystals on a selenite plate or bowl overnight, the most common cleansing practice in modern crystal work.
- Stand a tower near a lamp or window so the fibers carry the light through the room.
- Sweep a wand slowly around the body before meditation, a traditional gesture for clearing the field.
- Place pieces at the corners of a room or doorway when setting an intention for the whole space.
This Healing Stone Beings collection includes towers, charging plates, bowls, spheres, lamps and raw satin spar, each chosen for luminosity and finish. Browse and find the piece that will hold the light in your space.
