Amethyst is the violet variety of quartz, silicon dioxide, and its color comes from trace iron combined with natural irradiation inside the crystal lattice. It sits at 7 on the Mohs scale, hard enough to live on a desk or altar without much worry, though long exposure to direct sunlight can pale the color over time. The most familiar amethyst grows in gas cavities within ancient basalt flows, which is how the great hollow geodes of Rio Grande do Sul in Brazil and Artigas in Uruguay came to be. Zambian crystals lean deep reddish violet, Veracruz in Mexico is known for slender, water-clear points, and Thunder Bay in Ontario produces crystal with a red hematite skin.
