What Calcite Is

Calcite is calcium carbonate, one of the most widespread minerals on earth and the primary constituent of limestone and marble. It measures 3 on the Mohs scale, so it scratches easily, and it has perfect rhombohedral cleavage, which is why broken fragments so often form neat little rhombs. Calcite is famous for having more documented crystal habits than almost any other mineral, from scalenohedral dogtooth crystals to flat nailhead forms. Optically clear calcite, historically called Iceland spar, shows strong double refraction: a line viewed through it appears doubled. Many calcites fluoresce vividly under ultraviolet light. Notable sources include Mexico for orange and honey material, Peru for pink manganese-bearing calcite, Madagascar and Pakistan for blue, and China, Morocco and the American Midwest for crystallized specimens. Calcite reacts to acids, so keep it away from vinegar and household cleaners.

Calcite Meaning and Metaphysical Properties

Because calcite comes in so many colors, its traditional chakra associations follow the color rather than the species. Orange calcite is generally linked to the sacral chakra and creativity, honey and golden calcite to the solar plexus, green to the heart, blue to the throat and communication, and optical calcite to clarity and the crown.

In crystal practice calcite is often described as a gentle amplifier and a stone of renewal, and many people work with it when they want a lighter, warmer presence than a harder mineral offers.
