Raw ruby does not look like the ruby of jewelry cases, and that is the point. It comes as squat hexagonal crystals with flat terminations, sometimes still locked into pale marble or set against green zoisite, its red glowing out of the host rock. We source ruby as specimens rather than as gems, choosing pieces where the crystal form is legible and the color is genuinely its own.
What Ruby Is
Ruby is the red gem variety of corundum, aluminium oxide, colored by trace amounts of chromium. Every other color of gem corundum is called sapphire, so the two are the same mineral distinguished only by hue. Corundum has a hardness of 9, second only to diamond among natural minerals, which makes ruby remarkably durable. It commonly forms as tabular or barrel-shaped hexagonal crystals, typically in marbles and in some amphibolites and metamorphosed aluminous rocks. Fine needles of rutile, known as silk, are often present, and when they are aligned and the stone is cut correctly they produce the six-rayed asterism of a star ruby. Historic and current sources include Mogok in Myanmar, Madagascar, Tanzania, India, Greenland, and Mozambique.
Ruby Meaning and Metaphysical Properties
Ruby is traditionally associated with both the root and heart chakras, an unusual pairing that shows up repeatedly in its lore. It is linked to life force, courage, and passion, and has been carried as a talisman by warriors, travelers, and royalty across many cultures for a very long time.
Many people work with ruby when they want to reconnect with drive or with something they used to care about, and it is often described as a stone of devoted action rather than restless energy. Ruby in zoisite and ruby in fuchsite are traditionally worked with as gentler variations, where the green mineral is said to temper the red with a more patient quality.
How to Use Ruby
- Hold a piece over the heart during seated meditation, or rest it there while lying down.
- Keep a crystal on a workspace during creative work that has stalled.
- Pair it with garnet for a root-focused layout or with rose quartz for a softer heart-centered one.
- Wear or carry it freely, since ruby's hardness makes it one of the more forgiving stones to keep on you.
Here at Healing Stone Beings you will find hand-selected ruby: raw hexagonal crystals, record keeper faces, ruby in zoisite and fuchsite, and occasional cut pieces. Every specimen is chosen individually. Browse the collection and find the red that reads as alive.
