The thing that makes moonstone worth owning cannot be captured in a photograph. It is movement, a blue-white light that floats just under the surface and slides as you tilt the stone. We select moonstone in hand, in daylight, turning each piece until we can see whether the glow is really there or whether it is only a suggestion of it.

What Moonstone Is

Moonstone belongs to the feldspar group. The classic material is orthoclase feldspar containing fine lamellar intergrowths of albite, and the alternating layers scatter light in a way that produces adularescence, the drifting sheen the stone is named for. The name comes from adularia, after Mount Adular in Switzerland. Hardness is around 6 to 6.5, and moonstone has distinct cleavage, so it should be handled and stored with some care. Worth knowing: much of the material sold as rainbow moonstone is actually white labradorite, a plagioclase feldspar, closely related but not the same species. Fine moonstone comes from Sri Lanka and southern India, with additional material from Madagascar, Myanmar, and Tanzania.

Moonstone Meaning and Metaphysical Properties

Moonstone is traditionally associated with the crown, third eye, and sacral chakras and, unsurprisingly, with the moon and its cycles. It has long been considered a stone of intuition, of new beginnings, and of the patience required to let something unfold in its own time rather than on demand.

In older traditions it was carried as a traveler's stone, particularly for journeys taken at night or over water. Many people work with it in dream journaling, in seasonal or lunar practice, and at the start of anything where the outcome is not yet visible. It is said to encourage receptivity, which is a very different quality from effort.

How to Use Moonstone

• Keep a piece on a nightstand or somewhere you pass in the evening, as a marker for reflection.
• Hold it during journaling, especially at a new moon or when setting an intention for something just beginning.
• Pair it with labradorite, selenite, or clear quartz in a layout built around intuition and cycles.
• Store it separately from harder stones, and avoid knocks along the cleavage planes.
