Collection: Lemurian Seed Crystal
Lemurian Seed Crystals are quartz points identified by the horizontal striations, sometimes called ladders or bars, that run across their faces. The original and best-known material came from the Serra do Cabral area of Minas Gerais, Brazil, where points were found loose in sand rather than attached to a matrix.
The striations, and what they are
The horizontal ridging is a growth feature of quartz, formed as the crystal built up in layers under shifting conditions. In practice it gives the points a distinctly ribbed feel under the thumb. Many pieces also show frosted, sandblasted surfaces from their time in sediment, with clearer windows where a face stayed protected.
How the name is used
Lemurian is a trade and tradition name rather than a mineral species; the material itself is quartz. The term is now applied to striated points from several localities, including Colombian material sold under the same name. We try to be specific about what we are selling and where it came from, because that distinction matters to collectors. Points are bought from miners and collectors, chosen individually, and most are one-of-a-kind.
Choosing and caring for a point
Look for clean terminations, clear striation and a size that suits how you intend to use it. Small points travel well; larger ones make better display or altar pieces.
- Run a thumb along the striated face, since that texture is the point of the stone.
- Store terminations padded or upright, as tips are the first thing to chip.
- Clean with a soft brush and lukewarm water, then dry thoroughly.
