Kyanite grows in blades, thin and striated and often stacked like pages in a book. Held to the light, good material shows a streaky blue that deepens along the length of the crystal. We select for saturation, for intact blades that have not been split apart in handling, and for specimens where the natural terminations are still there.

What Kyanite Is

Kyanite is an aluminium silicate with the formula Al2SiO5, one of three polymorphs of that composition alongside andalusite and sillimanite. Its most famous property is anisotropic hardness: roughly 4.5 to 5 measured along the length of a blade and around 6.5 to 7 measured across it. This is why it was once called disthene, meaning two strengths. Kyanite forms under high pressure in metamorphic rocks such as schists and gneisses, and in associated quartz veins, which makes it a useful indicator mineral for geologists reading a region's history. Blue is the best known color, but black, green, and orange kyanite also occur, the orange from Tanzania. Fine material comes from Brazil, Nepal, and Zimbabwe, and kyanite is also well documented in the southern Appalachians, including here in North Carolina.

Kyanite Meaning and Metaphysical Properties

Blue kyanite is traditionally associated with the throat chakra and, more broadly, with alignment. Many people work with it when they want thought, speech, and action pointing in the same direction, and it is frequently described as a stone of clear expression rather than persuasive expression.

Kyanite carries one unusual piece of lore: it is widely said not to hold or accumulate negative energy, and therefore never to require cleansing. Whether or not one takes that literally, it has made kyanite a practical favorite for people who keep working stones in constant rotation. It is also traditionally used as a bridging stone, placed between other crystals in a layout to connect them.

How to Use Kyanite

• Rest a blade at the throat during meditation, or place blades along the length of the body in a layout.
• Carry a small blade in a soft pouch when you need to say something precisely.
• Set kyanite between two other stones in a grid to act as a connector.
• Handle gently and store separately, since the blades cleave easily along their length.
