Collection: Herkimer Diamond

Pick up a good Herkimer and the first thing you notice is that it looks finished. Points at both ends, natural facets already sharp, water-clear through the middle. Nobody cut it. It grew that way, and it is that quality of natural completeness that we look for when selecting these, along with genuine provenance from the region that gives them their name.

What Herkimer Diamonds Are

Herkimer diamonds are not diamonds. They are doubly terminated quartz crystals, silicon dioxide with a hardness of 7, and the name is a nickname earned by their brilliance and natural faceting. They formed in vugs and cavities within a dolostone of Cambrian age in and around Herkimer County, New York, meaning the host rock dates back roughly half a billion years. Because the crystals grew nearly free-floating inside those cavities rather than attached to a wall along one side, they developed points at both ends and unusually high clarity. Many contain inclusions of anthraxolite, a black carbon material, and some hold pockets of water or hydrocarbon trapped during growth, known as enhydros. Doubly terminated quartz occurs in other places, including Pakistan, Mexico, and Tibet, but only crystals from the Herkimer region are properly called Herkimer diamonds.

Herkimer Diamond Meaning and Metaphysical Properties

Herkimer diamonds are traditionally associated with the crown and third eye chakras and are widely described as amplifiers, said to strengthen the qualities of whatever stone or intention they are placed with. Their double termination is often read as the ability to send and receive at once.

Many people work with them for dream practice, keeping one near the bed and noting what shifts, and for attunement between people, where two crystals from the same pocket are kept by two individuals. They are also traditionally used for clearing, both of a space and of other stones.

How to Use Herkimer Diamonds

  • Place one alongside another crystal to amplify what you are already working with.
  • Hold one in each hand during seated meditation and let your attention settle.
  • Set a Herkimer at the center of a grid as the point that connects the outer stones.
  • Keep a small one in a travel bag, since their hardness and size make them easy companions.

This collection at Healing Stone Beings holds hand-selected Herkimer diamonds chosen for clarity, sharpness of termination, and interesting inclusions, including the occasional enhydro or anthraxolite-included piece. Sizes range from tiny singles to display specimens. Browse and see which one catches the light.
