What Pyrite Is

Pyrite is iron sulfide, an isometric mineral that measures about 6 to 6.5 on the Mohs scale, harder than most people expect from something with a metallic sheen. It crystallizes as cubes, pyritohedrons and octahedra, and the fine parallel striations on cube faces are a reliable identifying feature. Its brassy color and metallic luster earned it the nickname fool's gold, though the two are easy to tell apart: pyrite is much harder, far more brittle, and leaves a greenish-black streak. Navajun in La Rioja, Spain is celebrated for astonishingly perfect cubes in marl, Huanzala and other Peruvian mines produce pyrite with quartz and sulfides, and the coal measures of Illinois yield the flat radial pieces called pyrite suns. Pyrite can slowly oxidize in humid conditions, so it is best kept dry and away from steam.
