Fluorite is calcium fluoride, a halide mineral that crystallizes in the isometric system, most often as cubes and octahedra and sometimes as complex interpenetrating twins. It measures 4 on the Mohs scale, which makes it noticeably softer than quartz and easy to chip, and it has perfect octahedral cleavage in four directions, so the octahedra sold as specimens are often cleaved rather than grown. Color varies enormously with trace elements and lattice defects, running through purple, green, blue, yellow, pink and colorless, frequently banded within a single crystal. The phenomenon of fluorescence takes its name from this mineral. Classic localities include the Illinois and Kentucky fluorspar district, Weardale in County Durham, England, the Yaogangxian mine in Hunan, China, and deposits in Mexico, Namibia and Morocco.
