The Stone

Vivianite is a variety of amphibole minerals. The stone is named after Sir Arthur Thomas Cotton FRS (1832–1923), who discovered it in 1883 at a quarry near Ivigtut, Greenland. It is used as an ornamental stone, semi precious gemstone, ornamental carving material and an ingredient in jewelry because of its high transparency which makes it less prone to fracture when carved or sawn. Vivianite’s beautiful green color depends on its Fe content ranging from iron(II) through iron(III). This range corresponds to different physical properties such as crystal structure type or colors.
